In my last blog post, I talked about my first attempt at printing Japanese woodblock. Overall I was pretty happy with the results, however, I also realised I needed help. Especially with how much water, pigment and paste I need to use for each print. So I started looking around for places where I could be taught how to print and would be able to receive some in-person feedback at the same time. So I ended up stumbling across Takumi Hanga and with the assistance of master carver, Motoharu Asaka, I printed this!
It was a great experience, and I learned quite a lot of different printing techniques. But now I gotta put everything I just learned into practice!
The next print I did was originally a lithograph made by Ichijo Narumi in 1906 called Female Nude Seated in Water.
It's a fairly simple design with only two colours, which would translate really well as a woodblock print and give me some good printing practice.
I ended up carving two blocks - one for the water and the other block for the hair and printed three layers, shown below.
From left to right. Original Ichijo Narumi lithograph, light blue first layer, darker blue gradient second layer, black hair third layer.
And here's the finished print!
